These are a 2/4 spreads I did for a children’s book concept for class.
This is about an introverted girl who is forced outside by her teacher despite her preference to read her book inside. The girl goes outside with her book- which is about solitary animals. It’s within her book and imagination where she plays and through interacting and imitating the solitary animals she is left with an increased self understanding.
I wanted to do a children’s book on introversion because people are always encouraged to be outgoing and although it is fine to be social- it’s also fine to be alone. :)
This semester I have really been concentrating on not filling and rendering every inch of the page so it’s been a process to embrace the whitespace(woah it rhymes!) I also had a super rad teacher *cough Julie Morstad* who was really helpful. This project specifically is probably the most minimal one I have ever done and I used collage and my own textures.
This was my painting for a book I made for my bookmaking class, it was made in a small edition of 6 in a concertina binding style with screenprinted hardcovers. It was a response to the Shel Silverstein poem, “Where the Sidewalk Ends” it’s 9 x 40 :)
